But, not only did people lose their furniture, boilers, sheet rock, cars etc., they lost their memories – family photos, keepsakes and Christmas decorations.  While some things just can’t be salvaged or replaced, you can create new heirlooms.  Now we all have our favorite standbys like the tricolor bead candy canes (don’t have any? come on, you know you do!), I wanted something different so I searched my favorite site, Pinterest, for some inspiration and came up with a bunch of beautiful ornaments you can easily make (and they don’t look like something that came out of a Kindergarten classroom either).  Here are a few of my favorites:

These felt stars are easy and adorable to craft (from Purlbee) and are the epitome of the primitive look.  You could easily make them into a string garland  or incorporate them into a primitive theme (along with salt-dough ornaments below) with some burlap garland!

I absolutely adore these wood ornaments with scrapbook paper modged podged on (from Brown Paper Packages)  – another easy project:

These swirl nail polish ornaments (from Beautylish) are gorgeous:

My kids have made salt dough ornaments before and with the stamping here, they make a nice personalized ornament (from Design Editor):

It would be a great idea to host an ornament crafting party to make these for friends and neighbors who lost their Christmas Ornaments.  These are all fairly easy to make and you could definitely crank a bunch out over some hot cocoa (maybe with some schnapps). I hope you are as inspired as I am!

Happy crafting!

MIA All Summer and Disaster http://longislandchick.com/mia-all-summer/ http://longislandchick.com/mia-all-summer/#comments Wed, 17 Oct 2012 13:51:24 +0000 http://longislandchick.com/?p=8495 So this is the first time, since May that I actually visited this blog. I can’t say that I have been off on wonderful adventures, sipping cocktails beach side during the summer, etc. Nope. Had a pleasant summer with my kids – stayed local and went to the beach, hung out around the pool and played World of Warcraft (more than I would care to admit to!). Oh, and dealt with my Windows Home Server crash.  Crash??? Yeah – the system that backs up every computer in the house and is supposed to be our safety net, well crashed. Both disk drives started to fail and ALL OF MY DATA was on those drives.  Pictures, videos, thousands of dollars worth of digital scrapbook supplies – all locked up on a 2 TB drive.  Most people don’t even know what a TB or terabyte is.  Its a shitload of storage in a nutshell. And me, Queen of the Geeks and should have known better, did not have my photos from 2010 and later backed up.  Bad girl.

Sigh. I’m going to fast forward past all the gnashing of teeth, hair pulling and general despair to the good news: I recovered all of my precious memories.  Every last one of them. And, I didn’t have to remortgage my house to have some astronaut recover my data in a clean room.  I used two programs – Knoppix and Clonezilla and they literally saved me not only my sanity but thousands of dollars.  Now data recover is not for the faint of heart nor the average computer illiterate. Both these programs are Linux based – they don’t use Windows for an operating system. Talk about stepping out of my comfort zone.  The are also open source so they did not cost me a dime.

The problem with recovering data from the disk drive was that although the drive showed up in Windows, I could not explore the drive to pull the data.  CloneZilla and Knoppix allowed me to do just that.  Folder by folder, I transferred my data to an external hard drive (EHD) which was a slow, painful process.  Thankfully, the damaged files were ones I had backed up.  I’m still not even done though – my iTunes library is on that disk but I’ll get to that eventually. The irreplaceable data was my primary concern.

So now I’m going to be a good girl and come up with a back-up plan.  Scary thing is, there is no foolproof method.  During my hours of frantic research I came across a sobering fact: all media is destined to fail.  All media…did that sink in yet? You back up to a CD or a DVD religiously? Eventually they will degrade and fail.  EHD backup – FAIL.  The only real safe way to safeguard your photos is to PRINT THEM OUT.  Well, in light of this, I am going to create multiple backup systems – DVDs (multiple copies), EHD and an online backup system (which I need to investigate).

So that was my summer – how was yours?

Give the Most Precious Gift of All: Your Time http://longislandchick.com/give-most-precious-gift-of-all-your-time/ http://longislandchick.com/give-most-precious-gift-of-all-your-time/#comments Sat, 14 Apr 2012 19:04:20 +0000 http://longislandchick.com/?p=8395 Our time is truly our most precious commodity.  We are always so busy doing something or going somewhere.  This is the age of multitasking – I used to boast about carrying on more than 5 conversations at once – texting, instant messaging and email. Now, I don’t necessarily think that is quite as impressive as giving someone your undivided attention – especially our children. Many of the mom bloggers out there have infants and toddlers – take heed: THEY GROW UP QUICK!  Before you know it, that little cherub of a son will be busy with his own friends and you will be wondering where the time went and why you didn’t spend more time with him when you were his whole world.

Today, I decided to do just that – give my son, Ryan, my undivided attention.  I asked him to come out back with me to survey the yard and garden.  It is such a beautiful day and I wanted to get some fresh air. Ryan, as long as you aren’t asking him to go to Walbaums (heaven forbid!), is happy to do what ever you would like to do.  He promptly put his sneakers on and we went outside.  Spring is a time of new beginnings and I love seeing the plants push through the soil. It is also the time for us to do some yard cleanup as we never really accomplish that in the fall.  My one rose bush has shot up to be taller than me – we walked over there to admire its tenacity when I noticed a bottle of bubbles.  These scented bubbles (green apple) were in Ryan’s Easter basket.  Like finding hidden treasure, Ryan said “ooooooohh” and reached for them.  You know your boy is still a child as long as he can enjoy blowing bubbles.  So we sat down on the steps of the deck and blew bubbles together:

I was very content to just watch him blow bubbles and enjoy his delight in blowing some huge bubbles and catching them, especially after last week.  The accident changed my perspective a bit I think – makes me appreciate the little things because it is these little things that sometimes count the most.

So, go out there and give your child your undivided attention and create some memories!

Create Memories Instead of Regrets: Videotape Your Kids Often! http://longislandchick.com/create-memories-instead-of-regrets-videotape-your-kids-often/ http://longislandchick.com/create-memories-instead-of-regrets-videotape-your-kids-often/#comments Sun, 18 Mar 2012 19:00:39 +0000 http://longislandchick.com/?p=8165 With the advent of handheld technology, there is absolutely no reason you should not be videotaping your kids every opportunity you have. Don’t wait for special occasions or holidays either – make sure you capture every day moments as often, these are the most precious. One of my favorite videos of my kids was actually taken in the bathroom:

As you can see, my Ryan was such a little wiseguy! I completely forgot about this until I decided to download all the video to the computer with the intent of creating some family video dvd (a subject of a future post).

To get those every day moments make sure your video camera is handy and CHARGED. If your home videos are anything like mine, you will hear your husband’s voice saying “honey I only have a few minutes of battery left…” UGH! A video camera in its bag, tucked away in a closet isn’t capturing anything. If your cell phone has a video recording feature, make sure you know how to use it. Cell phones are wonderful for capturing candid video and that video can easily be uploaded to facebook and YouTube for sharing.

Here are 5 tips to improve your videotaping skills to make sure you capture the moment perfectly:

Get down to their level

When videotaping kids, try to get eye-level with them, whether on your knees, the floor, or a low chair. This position allows for greater interaction with the children.

Keep the Tape Rolling

Don’t be so quick to turn off the camera when the event you are capturing is finished.  When you feel you have captured the performance or giggle, let the camera continue to recordl for another minute or two. Some of the best moments happen unexpectedly, so if you have the camera on and focused on the subject, you’re more likely to get them on tape.

Keep Camera Movement Down to a Minimum

Don’t use a lot of movement with the camera. Feel free to adjust your shot according to what is taking place but minimize zooming and panning. Your subject should be providing the movement, not the camera. Here is a tip: when you see something you want to record, get a nice long shot of whatever is happening without any camera movement (zoom or panning) whatsoever. Then, move in to adjust the shot and then let it roll for a while. This way you will have both a wide-shot of the activity (something that shows all the action) and a close up.

Fill the Frame With Your Subject

This is especially important when videotaping infants. Some of the best video is where you can see the expressiveness in a baby’s face when she is playing peek-a-boo, or her determination in trying to get the spoon from the cereal to her mouth. Don’t be afraid to get really close!

Flip the Screen

Toddlers are such hams and if you flip around the LCD screen on the camera so the kids can see themselves in action you’ll a) get a nice extended close up shot because most children can focus on themselves for a while, and b) you’ll get some hysterical footage as kids figure out who’s on the screen and start making faces at themselves!

Remember, they are little only once and these movies are the best family movies! Get out there are video tape!

My Favorite Pinterest Pins for the Week of March 10th http://longislandchick.com/my-favorite-pinterest-pins-for-week-of-march-th/ http://longislandchick.com/my-favorite-pinterest-pins-for-week-of-march-th/#respond Sun, 11 Mar 2012 16:41:12 +0000 http://longislandchick.com/?p=7985 I am an admitted Pinterest fanatic and I wanted to share with you my favorite pins from the past week:

Sweet Italian Sausage With Penne Pasta

I do so love pasta and this just looks absolutely delicious! I have found so many wonderful recipes through Pinterest – can’t wait to try them all!

Childhood Memories

I love these posts of things we did that we not might have remembered.  The game of not allowing a balloon to reach the floor brings back so much memories.  My kids played this too!

DIY Chip Clips

To me, buying chip clips is such a colossal waste of money – the damn things always seem to break or just mysteriously disappear! Now, instead of throwing out those crappy hangers you get from Target, upcycle them!

The Ultimate Vanilla Cupcake

Ok, it has a golden crown and is up on a beautiful pedestal  – it must be the ultimate vanilla cupcake!  This blogger went through a lot of trouble to try different recipes and even involved readers in taste tests.  I am definitely going to have to bake this one!

Monsters!

I love the look of these monsters – will have to blow the dust off my sewing machine!!!

So there you have it, a small sample of what I discovered this week on Pinterest – stay tuned for next week’s segment!
